Spartans very interested in Ohio WR
It is a great year for talent in Ohio and one of the top wide receiver prospects in the Buckeyes State is Demitrious Davis of Austintown Fitch High School. Not only is Davis a high-level recruit, but he has a talented twin brother and they both have family ties to Michigan State.
SpartanMag.com was able to speak with the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Davis and got the latest details on his recruitment. Davis already has an impressive list of scholarship offers on the table and several other schools are getting very close to pulling the trigger.
"I have scholarship offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Arkansas, Baylor, Indiana, SMU, Bowling Green, Kent State and Toledo," he stated. "Schools that are very interested but have not offered yet are UCLA, Oregon State, West Virginia, Purdue, Michigan state and Ohio State."
Davis, who plays quarterback, led Austintown Fitch to a 10-2 record and the second round of the Ohio Division I playoffs. On the season he completed 62-of-99 passes for 986 yards with nine touchdowns and only two interceptions and rushed 158 times for 1,091 yards (6.9 ypc) and 19 scores. He was namked All-League Player of the Year and 1st team All-Ohio
SpartanMag.com asked Davis about the position schools want him for at the next level and his plans for the coming weeks.
"I am being recruited to play slot wide receiver," he said. "I have already been to Pittsburgh and Kent State and I am scheduled to go to Indiana on the 26th. I will also be going to some schools to check out spring practice."
An interesting aspect about Davis' recruitment is that his father, Chris Davis Sr., was at Michigan State back in the early 1990's. We asked him about that.
"Yes, my dad went to Michigan State and played there," Davis said. "He was there in 1991 and 1992. He came back when my sister was born. We were up at Michigan State last fall for the Notre Dame game."
Have the Spartan Coaches been in contact with you frequently and what are they saying?
"Yes, I just spoke with Coach Narduzzi earlier today," Davis said. "He said they are very interested and they are going to stay in touch. He wants me to come up to camp this summer and it would be a big honor to get a scholarship from Michigan State. I really like the program they have there. I feel like they are going to compete for a national championship in the near future and I would really like to be a part of that."
Another interesting aspect about Davis' recruitment is that he has a twin brother, Chris Davis Jr., who is also a high-level prospect for the class of 2012.
Chris also has an impressive list of scholarship offers and could play wide receiver of cornerback at the next level. Chris Davis was an 1st Team All-League and 2nd Team All-Ohio Selection.
Michigan State has already offered running back William Mahone from Austintown Fitch High School a scholarship. We asked Demitrious about his brother and Mahone.
"Yes, we have talked about all going to the same school if things work out," he said. "It would be great if we could go as a package deal and help a team win a championship. I would like to make my decision before my senior year. I am looking for an offense that fits my skills and is family oriented program. "
As SpartanMag.com has often pointed out, package deals do not always workout when it comes to recruiting. With that being said, a lot will depend on the Spartan 1-Day Elite Camp. If the Michigan State Coaches believe that the Davis brothers can project at wide receiver and defensive back, they could offer both players. If that happens it is very possible that a package deal could occur.
Based on SpartanMag.com's scholarship projections we see Michigan State signing 2 wide receiver and two cornerback prospect for the class of 2012. The Elite 1-Day Camp will likely determine who ends up in Green and White, just like it did last year when players like Arjen Colquhoun and Trae Waynes locked up offers after strong performances.
