Whitlow lines up Ole Miss visit

Jalen Whitlow was going to be the prized jewel in Arkansas State's recruiting class.

Then Hugh Freeze left Jonesboro for Ole Miss. Suddenly things have, as Whitlow said Monday night, "opened up."

Arkansas State remains in the mix for the three-star quarterback from Prattville, Ala. Minnesota is in the picture as well, as are Central Florida and Ole Miss. Whitlow, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder with 4.55-second speed in the 40-yard dash, said he holds no grudge against Freeze. Instead, he's hoping the coach he once was committed to provides him the same opportunity in Oxford, Miss.

"I mean, he had to do what he had to do," Whitlow said. "I talked to (Ole Miss defensive line coach) Chris Kiffin a couple of times. I have a visit set up on Jan. 27."

The Rebels, Whitlow said, have not yet offered. If they do, it's not out of the question that he'll commit to the same coach twice.

"They're just talking about the quarterback situation there," Whitlow said. "(An offer to Ole Miss) would mean a lot. It would be a big shake-up for me. I would have to re-evalutate everything."

Whtlow said he might visit Minnesota on Jan. 13 and possibly follow that with a trip to Central Florida on Jan. 20.

"I feel like it's going to work out. I'm not really worried about it," Whitlow said, adding he believes a lot of schools "have overlooked me. I think I could play quarterback anywhere I go. I think I could play quarterback in the SEC."

Whitlow, who said Ole Miss is recruiting him as a quarterback, said he's open to playing other positions, though it's not his preference.

"I've been playing quarterback all my life. I prefer to play quarterback, but I guess if they want to offer me as a receiver or an athlete, that's fine with me, but I prefer to play quarterback."
